Earlier this year, Maryland ruled that pit bulls were “inherently dangerous” and also if a tenants dog bites someone, the landlord can be sued. Earlier this month, a letter was sent out to every resident at the Armistead Gardens apartment complex in East Baltimore. The letter reads: “If you have a pit bull or cross-bred pit bull mix, you must get rid of the animal immediately.” One of the residents refuses to get rid of his pit bull, but his only option is to go to court.

“What may be in the interest of the community may be to ban pit bulls and anything that looks like a pit bull so they don’t have a financial judgment issued against them.” said the attorney of the resident refusing to get rid of his pit bull.

The ruling from the Maryland Court Of Appeals applies statewide and the first apartment complex to want to get rid of all pit bulls was the Armistead Gardens apartment complex, however this isn’t the only apartment complex willing to do so. While reading through different articles, I read that this only applied to pure bred pit bulls but no such thing exists because a pitty is a type of dog.

On Facebook, there is a page called “I HATE PITBULLS” I am not sure if the page was removed of if it is still up and running. There is no administrator, so you can’t message them to ask to remove the page. On the page, there are graphic pictures of dead pit bulls, dead pit bulls on grills and they took pictures off peoples Facebook pages of their pit bulls and made jokes about shooting and killing their pit bulls. I was disgusted going through these pictures and couldn’t believe someone could ever dedicate a page to one breed of dog they no nothing about. Facebook deletes rude comments that insult others almost instantly but they have not done anything about this page (as far as I know). There is a petition to get the page taken off and please sign it, they already have 21,813 signatures when their goal was only 10,000! I think the more signatures, the better. This Facebook page is vile and needs to be removed immediately. There have been countless people commenting on their pictures and wall, talking about shooting a pit bull dead if they ever saw one. I have spent much of my time reporting this page with the hopes of  it being shut down. Below, I will post the petition site along with some of the pictures on the page *Warning, they are GRAPHIC*

On July 24th, an article was published in The Langley Times titled “Dog Rules Discriminate”. In the district of Maple Ridge, staff want to put in a new animal control bylaw that “singles out pit bulls as aggressive” and want to charge owners of pit bulls licensing fees four times as much, but other breeds wouldn’t be charged that much. Pit bulls, any bully or crosses would the charge apply to. The owners would have to pay $200 a year, as an aggressive dog licensing fee, and the dogs are required to wear a muzzle any time they are out. The bylaw is a result of the public reacting to pit bulls and their concerns.

“The bylaw, as its proposed, discriminates against a certain breed and seems a simple, unfair solution to appease fears that may be unfounded. Basically, it says the district doesn’t want these dogs in Maple Ridge, when really what we want is irresponsible dog owners.”-Maple Ridge News

That quote was taken from the article, and I am happy that someone who isn’t biased, uneducated or ignorant wrote the article because that really does make a difference.

Good news! As of May 22, 2012, Ohio’s law now states that dangerous dogs are now defined on behavior NOT breed. Before, Ohio, as well as Maryland used to state dogs were vicious based on breed and looks. Ohio has been the only state to categorize dogs based on looks and breed. However, some places in Ohio will still continue to ban pit bulls.

Although this is good news, it makes me wonder when they won’t base on breed and behavior, but when they’ll base on humans and ownership. Ohio states that they now define a dangerous dog by behavior, however that behavior is learned and they learn it from their owners. Makes me wonder when humans are going to get it and be punished. For now though, I think that Ohio’s law is better than no law being lifted and changed, its a step to a better future for pit bulls.

In Northern Ireland 2010, Lennox was take into custody because he looks similar to a pit bull. Under Northern Ireland’s Dangerous Dog Act, they have the right to euthanize Lennox according to The (UK) Guardian.  Lennox has been kept from his family ever since he was taken away from them back in 2010. Last week, the countries highest court rejected the final appeal for Lennox to be saved and returned to his family. Now the case will have to be appealed on a point of law to protect him. On top of all that, Northern Ireland is making it illegal for people in the country to own a pit bull or anything that looks like a pit bull. The court says its the families responsibility to prove that Lennox is not a pit bull.

The good news is, there is a chance that Lennox can return home. The judge has to rule that the dog is not a danger to the public, however that is rarely seen in these cases and there have been several witnesses saying that Lennox has shown aggressive behavior. Lennox’s family has been fighting and fighting for there beloved dog, they have even started a petition that has already gotten 15,000 signatures. Sadly, Lennox will be euthanized this month unless the queen or secretary of state steps in. Please help and support the fight to free Lennox!

I received an email a while ago from this very kind women named Ruby who shared a personal story of  her two pit bulls, Ace and Cash. One day Cash and Ace went off to explore, but they were no where to be found after they had searched for them. A few days later her moms boyfriend, Aces owner found them. They were shot and left on the side of the road by a farm. These dogs had never done anything to anyone, and Cash was only just a puppy.

This story touched me and I had tears in my eyes after reading it. I decided to make a post about this because I think people need to hear about this and it needs to be out there. Two innocent pit bulls were shot and killed, most likely because they were pit bulls. This is not okay, this is disgusting and makes me lose hope in humans because I don’t understand how people can kill two innocent dogs. I’m glad she personally shared this story with me, it touched my heart.

Ruby told me that she tries her hardest to clear the pit bulls name and fight for them. She shares the same passion as I do, we both will not stop the pit bulls fight for justice and restoring their reputation. Thank you Ruby for emailing me and sharing your story, I really do appreciate it! And continue to fight for the pit bulls!

Chris Browns pit bull, Breezy, had 8 puppies at the end of February and is selling them for $1000 a puppy. Brown has a site dedicated to the puppies and getting them good homes. This isn’t a new career move, his dog was not neutered (like most celebrities and their dogs)

Brown should look at spaying and neutering his dogs so he can avoid this happening again. There are thousands of unwanted pits in shelters across the world and if he wants them to get good homes then he shouldn’t be selling them on the internet. He obviously doesn’t care about the care of the dogs or getting them new homes, he just wants to make money off them. There are thousands of thousands of dogs being euthanized every day, and that’s where his puppies could end up. If Chris really understood the breed he would use his own money and put it towards shelters and to bring awareness to the discriminatory legislation against them. Chris is no advocate for the breed, doesn’t understand them and is simply just a user of their image.
